Overview
SplitFast Field Events is the essential app for recording, ranking, and managing field event results in athletics. Built for coaches, club officials, teachers, and meet organisers running training sessions, athletics meets, and sports carnivals. It operates independently from the SplitFast Timing App — no Timing Hub or LiDAR gates are required.
Use the app standalone in Local Mode to record events on a single device with athletes you set up yourself, or sign in to your SplitFast Portal account to use Portal Mode and sync athletes, meets, and results with your club's portal records.
Supported Events
The app currently supports the following events:
- Long Jump
- Triple Jump
- High Jump
- Javelin
- Shot Put
- Discus
Note: Pole Vault and Hammer are not currently supported. These events will be added in a future update.
Local Mode and Portal Mode
The app can be used in two modes, selected from the Settings tab. You can switch between them at any time — local data stays on the device when you sign in or out.
Local Mode
Local Mode is the default. It lets you record results entirely on a single device without an account or an internet connection.
- No account needed — start recording results immediately, no sign in required.
- Works offline — all data is stored on the device; no internet connection is used.
- Manage your own athletes — add athletes manually or import from a CSV file using Manage Local Athletes.
- Local meets and results — create meets, run events, and review results all on the device.
- Share results — export results as CSV files to share by email, AirDrop, or any sharing app.
Best for: coaches, schools, and clubs that want to record field event results quickly with no setup, no accounts, and no cloud sync.
Portal Mode
Portal Mode connects the app to a SplitFast Portal club account. This is for clubs that already use SplitFast Portal to manage athletes, meets, and records online.
- Sign in required — sign in with your club's SplitFast Portal account from the Settings tab.
- Club data syncs automatically — athletes, meets, club records, and personal records sync from the portal to the app.
- Results sync back — results recorded in the app sync back to the portal so they're visible across your whole club.
- Field results appear alongside track results — at results.splitfast.com, field events appear in the same meet view as timing results, giving officials, athletes, and parents a single, complete picture of the carnival.
- Internet connection required for sync — initial sign in and syncing require an internet connection; you can still record results offline once data has synced.
Best for: clubs with a SplitFast Portal account that want meets, athletes, and results managed centrally and shared across multiple devices, coaches, and club members.
Switching Modes
- Local → Portal — tap Sign in to your club on the Settings tab and enter your portal email and password.
- Portal → Local — tap Logout on the Settings tab. The app returns to Local Mode and your local data remains on the device.
Note: The remainder of this manual describes the full event workflow, which is the same in both modes. The main difference is where athletes and meets come from — set up locally on the device in Local Mode, or pulled from the portal in Portal Mode — and whether results are synced back to the portal or exported as CSV.
Local Mode Subscriptions
Free use is limited to 5 local athletes. Subscriptions are separate from a SplitFast Portal account — portal users can use the app at no extra cost when signed in. Subscription prices vary by region; see in-app pricing for current rates.
The app offers two optional auto-renewing annual subscriptions for use in Local Mode:
- Individual — unlimited local athletes for personal use on your own devices.
- Club — unlimited local athletes across every device signed in to the same Apple ID (iOS) or Google Account (Android). Ideal for schools and clubs running events on multiple tablets.
Device Requirements
The SplitFast Field Events App runs on iOS and Android tablets and is designed to work reliably even when no internet connection is available.
Internet Connection — Local Mode
No internet connection is required. Athletes, meets, and results are all stored on the device, and there is no portal sync. An internet connection is only needed if you want to share exported results (for example by email) or to validate a subscription with the App Store or Google Play Store.
Internet Connection — Portal Mode
When you need internet:
- Before the meet — to download the meet settings from the Results Portal.
- After events — to sync results back to the Results Portal.
When you don't need internet:
- During the meet itself, while recording results on the tablet — no internet required.
How syncing works in Portal Mode:
- Meet settings sync automatically whenever the tablet has an internet connection. Once the settings are on the tablet, you can run the entire meet offline — the app will record all results locally without needing to stay connected.
- Results are synced manually from the Results page. You can sync at any time the tablet is back online, either during breaks in the meet or once the meet has finished.
Getting Started
Download the App
- On your iOS or Android tablet, open the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for SplitFast Field Events.
- Download and install the app.
- Open the app. You can start recording results immediately in Local Mode, or go to Settings and sign in with your club credentials to use Portal Mode. Portal credentials are the same email and password used to access the Results Portal — contact SplitFast if you have not yet received your login details.
Before Running an Event (Portal Mode)
In Portal Mode, before the carnival ensure the following has been completed in the Results Portal:
- The meet has been created with the correct date, age groups, and event program.
- All athletes are registered in the club members database and assigned to the correct age groups.
- Field events are included in the meet's event program.
Tip: Setting up the meet in the portal the evening before the carnival means the app will have everything ready to go on the morning. See the SplitFast Administrator User Guide for portal setup instructions.
Selecting a Meet in the App
- Open the Field Events App on your tablet.
- On the Run page, tap Setup Event.
- Tap Select Meet and choose the meet you want to run. In Portal Mode this is the meet you created in the Results Portal; in Local Mode this is a meet you created on the device. You will then be taken back to the Event Setup Page.
General Workflow for All Field Events
All field events follow the same basic workflow in the app. The sections that follow describe event-specific steps, but the overall process is the same for every event.
Setting Up an Event
- Tap Event Type and select the event — for example, Javelin.
- Tap Gender and select the gender of the competing athletes.
- Tap Age Group and select the appropriate age group. Only age groups included in the meet setup will appear.
- Tap Heat Type and select Heat, Semi Final, Final, or Training as appropriate.
Adding Athletes to the Event
- Tap Clear to remove any athletes still displayed from the previous event.
- Confirm by tapping Clear again.
- Tap Select to open the athlete selection page.
- A list of athletes filtered by the age group and gender you selected will appear.
- Tap each athlete who will compete in this event to select them.
- Tap Save to confirm and return to the Event Setup Page.
- Confirm that you have chosen the correct: Event, Gender, Age Group, Heat type, and athletes.
- Tap Continue to Start to go to the Run page.
- When officials and athletes are ready, tap Start to begin the event.
Tip: You can add or remove athletes from an event while it is in progress. Athlete lists do not need to be finalised before tapping Start.
Editing and Correcting Results
Results can be edited at any time during or after an event. To edit an attempt:
- Tap the athlete's row to view their attempts.
- Tap the arrow to the right of the attempt you wish to edit.
- Change the validity of the attempt (valid, foul, or no throw/jump) or correct the distance or height.
- Tap Save to confirm the change.
Note: Results can be corrected even after the event has ended. Rankings are recalculated automatically — by the app in Local Mode, and by the Results Portal once changes have been synced in Portal Mode.
Long Jump and Triple Jump
Long jump and triple jump follow the same workflow in the app. Athletes make a series of attempts and the best valid result determines their final ranking.
Running the Event
- Set up the Event following the general workflow above.
- When the event begins, plus signs (+) will appear to the right of each athlete's name on the Run page.
- As each athlete makes an attempt, tap the + sign next to their name to record the attempt.
- Select the result type:
- Valid — the attempt is legal. Enter the distance in metres using the keypad and tap Save.
- Foul — the attempt is a foul. Select Foul and tap Save. No distance is recorded.
- No Jump — the athlete passed on the jump and no distance is recorded.
- Continue recording attempts for each athlete as the event progresses.
- The number displayed to the left of each athlete's best result shows which attempt produced their best distance, followed by the total number of attempts made so far.
- To view all attempts for an athlete, tap their row.
- When all athletes have completed all their attempts, tap End Event and confirm.
Tip: You do not need to record athletes in any particular order. Tap the + sign for whichever athlete has just completed an attempt, regardless of the order on screen.
Editing Results
- Tap the athlete's row to display all their attempts.
- Tap the arrow to the right of the attempt to edit.
- Change the validity or correct the distance, then tap Save.
- Results can also be edited after the event has ended from the Results page — tap the event, select Details, then tap any attempt to make changes.
Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin
Shot put, discus, and javelin all follow the same workflow as horizontal jumps. Athletes make a series of attempts and the best valid distance determines their ranking.
Running the Event
- Set up the Event following the general workflow, selecting Shot Put, Discus, or Javelin as the Event Type.
- When the event begins, plus signs (+) will appear beside each athlete's name.
- As each athlete makes an attempt, tap the + sign and select the result type:
- Valid — enter the distance in metres using the keypad and tap Save.
- Foul — select Foul and tap Save. No distance is recorded.
- No Throw — the athlete declined to throw and no distance is recorded.
- Continue recording attempts throughout the event.
- To view or edit any athlete's attempts, tap their row.
- When all athletes have completed all their attempts, tap End Event and confirm.
Note: Distances should be entered in metres. For example, enter 34.56 for a throw of 34 metres and 56 centimetres.
Records (Portal Mode)
Club records are managed through the Results Portal and only apply in Portal Mode. When a club record is broken a text box appears requesting the name of the official ratifying the record and a unique Authorisation code. The code is configured in the portal before the event.
Once the official's name and the code have been entered into the text box, the result will be added to the pending club records list in the portal (when it is synced). Club admins can then review the result and validate the record is correct and accept it, or reject it. Accepting the record replaces the current club record for this age, gender and event type for the club.
High Jump
High jump is managed differently from other field events because athletes compete at a series of progressively increasing bar heights, rather than making independent attempts to achieve a maximum distance. The app handles the full progression automatically.
Setting Up the Event
Set up the Event following the general workflow, selecting High Jump as the Event Type.
Setting the Starting Bar Height
- Tap Start to commence the event.
- You will see a list of the participating athletes' names.
- You will also see a column labelled Start. This is a suggested starting height based on the athlete's previous performances.
- Tap the + sign beside Height.
- Enter the starting bar height in metres using the keypad — for example, enter 0.85 for 85 centimetres.
- Tap Save. A result entry symbol will appear beside each athlete's name, indicating they are eligible to attempt this height.
- To edit a bar height after it has been entered, tap the height and ensure that it is highlighted in red. Then select the pen-and-paper icon to the right of the height row. Type in the adjusted height on the keypad and tap Save.
Note (Portal Mode): Minimum starting heights can be configured per age group in the Results Portal. Check your portal settings before the event to ensure the correct minimums are applied. In Local Mode the starting height is whatever you enter on the device.
Which Athlete Jumps Next
As the program automatically calculates the start height for each athlete, some athletes may not be required to jump until later in the competition. To aid the official, the row of the next athlete scheduled to jump is shown in blue highlights.
If an athlete requests to jump before they are required to jump in the competition, select their name and then enter the result of their attempt as shown below.
Recording Attempts
As each athlete makes an attempt at the current height, tap the result entry symbol beside their name and select one of the following:
- O — Cleared: The athlete has successfully cleared the height. They do not need to attempt this height again. The success is recorded in their ranking and they progress to the next round.
- X — Failed: The athlete has knocked the bar. They must make further attempts at this height unless they have reached the elimination threshold.
- — — Pass: The athlete chooses to skip this height and move to the next round. No success is recorded at this height.
Above the result entry section is a switch that allows the official to switch between Active and Abandoned. Active indicates that the athlete is still an active participant in the competition. Select Abandoned if the athlete wants to voluntarily withdraw from the competition.
Tip: In Portal Mode the elimination rule is configured in the meet settings in the Results Portal before the event. In Local Mode it is set when you create the meet on the device. The app applies whichever rule has been set automatically.
Elimination
When an athlete reaches the elimination threshold, the app will display a message asking you to confirm or cancel their elimination.
- Tap Confirm to eliminate the athlete. Their name will be dimmed and they will not participate in further rounds.
- Tap Cancel if the elimination was triggered in error.
Raising the Bar
- When all athletes have either cleared the current height or been eliminated from it, tap the + sign beside Height.
- Enter the new bar height and tap Save.
- Continue recording attempts at the new height.
- Repeat until only one athlete remains, or all athletes have been eliminated.
- The final athlete may continue attempting successively greater heights until they choose to stop or are eliminated.
- Tap End Event and confirm to close the event.
Tip: The app automatically tracks and ranks athletes based on the heights cleared and the number of attempts taken. You do not need to calculate rankings manually.
Editing High Jump Results
- To edit a result during the event, tap the athlete's row to view their details, then tap the result entry symbol beside the attempt to change.
- Alter the success of the attempt (O, X, or pass) and tap Save.
- After the event, tap the event on the Results page and select Details. Tap the athlete, then tap the result to edit. Alter the success and tap Save.
Ending the Event
At the conclusion of the event, be sure to tap End Event.
Viewing and Publishing Results
Viewing Results in the App
After an event ends, full results can be reviewed in the app at any time.
- Tap the Results tab on the Run page.
- Select the event you wish to review.
- Tap Details to view all individual attempts made by each athlete.
- Tap any attempt to make further edits to its validity or recorded distance or height.
Sharing Results in Local Mode
In Local Mode, results stay on the device. To share them, export them as a CSV file from the Results page and send the file by email, AirDrop, or any sharing app on the tablet.
Results Portal Integration (Portal Mode)
To sync an event to the portal:
- Select Results.
- Select the tick box beside the event you want to sync.
- Select Sync.
In the portal, field event results are displayed alongside track results in the same meet view. Athletes and families viewing results through the Club Connect app will see field event results as they are published by an official using the portal. Initially the results will be shown as pending.
After the carnival, the meet director can review all pending field event results in the portal, make any final corrections, and mark the results as official. The portal will automatically identify new personal bests and club records, flagging them on the dashboard.
As well as syncing to the portal, results in Portal Mode can also be exported to a CSV file from the Results page — the same as in Local Mode — for sharing by email, AirDrop, or any sharing app on the tablet.
Tip: If you need to correct a result after it has synced to the portal, alterations must be made in the portal.
